The love you send out into the world will come back to you ten-fold.
A portion of every grace + hudson purchase is donated to charity. Every purchase, every day. Giving back to others is one way we can nurture our own souls, and I wanted to build a business with some soul. Try it - the next time you are feeling down and out, give a smile to a stranger who looks like they need one, or buy coffee for the person behind you in Starbucks. I promise you, it'll instantly attract more loving, positive energy your way. A new charity will be selected on a bi-annual basis because we should spread love far and wide!
From now through March 31, 2018, g+h will donate proceeds to Kenny Chesney's Love For Love City Foundation, which helps victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the United States and British Virgin Islands. Kenny has a house on the Island of St. John, which is nicknamed "Love City" because of its loving, generous, and friendly vibes. I chose this charity in particular because Kenny has been directly involved in recovery efforts, and every single dollar sees the victims.
The status of the Islands is not good. Many do not know that the Islands were hit by both Irma and Maria, both at Cat 5 strength. Media coverage has been focused on the U.S. mainland, but unlike Florida or Texas, where basic necessities and construction materials can be driven from neighboring states, everything must reach the Islands by boat or air, including the additional crews that will be necessary to rebuild. Recovery is going to be a much longer process. They are still working to restore power, and most of the major hotels will not re-open until 2019. The people of the Virgin Islands also rely on tourism as their livelihood, making recovery even more critical.
It's also important to share why Love For Love City resonated with me. The Virgin Islands are a second home to me. I visit every year, and I feel like I must have lived there in a prior life. It's also the place that inspired me to start my own jewelry business. In fact, I can tell you exactly where I was standing in the Caribbean Sea when I said to my friend, "I'm going to quit my lawyer job and start my own jewelry business." Literally, at the time, I had never made a piece of jewelry in my life. It's hard not to be inspired by the loving, friendly, and entrepreneurial spirit of this magical place. Many of the residents left their 9 to 5's because they knew there was something more. They didn't want to wait until age 65 to start living their dreams and living in paradise. That energy is incredibly contagious when you visit. Consider taking a trip there after the rebuilding efforts are well under way. You won't regret it (and email me for recommendations!)
Donations will be made to the Love For Love City Foundation from grace + hudson purchases made between October 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018. Will you help us spread love?
